A Moroccan freelancer who lands a first Upwork contract runs into three questions almost immediately: how to get the money out, how much Upwork keeps on the way, and under which status the income should be declared. The answers come down to a handful of figures, all checkable on the platform's own help pages.
To withdraw Upwork earnings in Morocco, the cheapest route is Direct to Local Bank: $0.99 per withdrawal, a 100 MAD minimum, and arrival within four business days. A USD wire costs $50, while Payoneer usually lands within 24 hours.
Which Upwork withdrawal methods work in Morocco?
Upwork offers several payout routes, but they are not equal for a Moroccan account. Local bank transfer, USD wire, Payoneer and PayPal are the four you will see most often among freelancers in Casablanca, Rabat or Marrakech.
Here is the part that surprises people: Morocco is on the list of countries eligible for Direct to Local Bank. According to Upwork's help page for this method, the fee is $0.99 per withdrawal, the Moroccan minimum is 100 MAD, and funds should arrive within four business days. After eight business days Upwork can trace the payment. A request made after noon UTC is processed the next business day, and US or Moroccan bank holidays can add delay. Your own bank may also charge incoming transfer fees (Upwork says so itself).
(One handy detail: withdrawing in dirhams can reduce or even remove those bank fees, since the conversion happens upstream.)
| Method | Upwork fee | Stated timing | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local bank transfer | $0.99 per withdrawal | Within 4 business days | 100 MAD minimum for Morocco, possible fees from your bank |
| USD wire | $50 per transfer | Processed within 1 business day, up to 7 business days to arrive | Correspondent bank fees possible, exchange rate set by your bank |
| Payoneer | Small per-transfer fee, amount not stated by Upwork | Typically within 24 hours | Payoneer charges its own fees (conversion, withdrawal, maintenance) |
| PayPal | Varies | Varies | See our guide on PayPal in Morocco |
What does Upwork take before you even withdraw?
The withdrawal fee is only the second bite. The first is the service fee on each contract. Contrary to a common belief, it is not a flat rate: Upwork states it ranges from 0% to 15% depending on the contract, is shown before you accept an offer or submit a proposal, and then stays fixed for the life of that contract. Enterprise clients typically sit at 10%.
Take Salma, a graphic designer in Casablanca billing a US client $1,200 a month. With a 10% fee (a textbook assumption), Upwork keeps $120 and she is left with $1,080. A local bank withdrawal then costs her $0.99. The same amount sent by wire would lose $50 in one go, close to 5% of what she just earned.
A simple pricing rule: start from what you want to take home, then gross up. If you want $20 an hour net and the fee is 10%, you need to list about $22.22 (that is the example Upwork itself gives). To benchmark your rates, our guide to freelance day rates in Morocco gives ranges by profession.
Local transfer, Payoneer or wire: which one to pick?
It depends on your volume. For a freelancer withdrawing between $500 and $3,000 a month, the local transfer almost always wins: one fixed cost of $0.99 and conversion at your Moroccan bank's rate. Its weak point is timing, since four business days can stretch to a week once a weekend and a holiday are involved.
Payoneer keeps its appeal if you have several clients beyond Upwork, or want to receive dollars and euros on foreign bank details. But its own fees stack on top of Upwork's and depend on your profile. Our comparison of Payoneer, Wise and wire transfers for freelancers in Morocco breaks down those costs.
The $50 wire only makes sense for a large one-off sum, say the end of an $8,000 project. On a small withdrawal it is the worst option.
Selling gigs elsewhere too? Fees and timing differ on Fiverr, as our guide to Fiverr in Morocco: withdrawals, fees and legal status shows.
What about currency rules and tax?
Whether the money goes through Upwork, Payoneer or PayPal, it is foreign currency income from a client based abroad. Morocco's Office des Changes frames these flows, with repatriation deadlines and rules on foreign currency accounts that we cover in our guide to Morocco's currency rules for freelancers. Keep one habit: store Upwork statements, withdrawal receipts and bank statements together. That is your paper trail if anyone asks questions.
For tax, turnover is declared in dirhams. Conversion uses the rate on the date the money is actually received, not the invoice date, as explained in our guide to the quarterly self-employed declaration. Another point many people miss: the Upwork fee is not a deduction. A self-employed person's turnover is based on the amount invoiced, not the net received, so contributions and tax apply to $1,200 in Salma's case, not $1,080.
Which status should you use to work on Upwork from Morocco?
Many freelancers start with no status at all, out of caution or simply not knowing. The issue is straightforward: regular activity generating income from a foreign client should sit inside a legal framework. For most profiles (designers, developers, writers, translators), the self-employed (auto-entrepreneur) status is the usual starting point, with filing duties and social cover described in our guide to CNSS for the self-employed.
But that status has a turnover ceiling. A freelancer moving upmarket on Upwork, with one or two large recurring clients, can hit it sooner than expected. Two exits exist: set up a company, or use an umbrella company, which gives you a Moroccan employment contract and full social protection without building a structure.
How do you avoid the usual mistakes?
A few errors show up with almost every beginner. Linking an account under a name that does not match the bank account blocks the withdrawal. Pulling small amounts every week multiplies the fixed $0.99 fee (one withdrawal a month is often enough). And mixing business and personal money in a single account makes the quarterly declaration painful.
A healthy habit: keep a simple sheet with the Upwork payment date, gross amount, fee, bank receipt date and the amount in MAD. Five columns, ten minutes a month, and your declarations are ready.
Before your next withdrawal, check the fees shown in your Upwork account, as they can change. Then compare your current status with your real turnover: if you are close to the ceiling, now is the time to plan the next step.
